Quest For Happiness
When Adam and Eve were turned out from their permanent abode of happiness, they were condemned to live in permanent rivalry, farewell to happiness. Being unhappy with his lot, man has always been in quest of happiness. Everybody wishes to be happy but very few succeed in their research. It is the fate of the fortunate few.
In His infinite mercy God has blessed man with strength, beauty and then wealth; but He has kept away ‘rest’ so that he may not be lost in His gifts and turn to Him in time of distress and need. This is the true philosophy of life. Various questions strike the mind in this respect. What is happiness? Why is man unhappy, and on what does happiness depend? What is the ultimate destiny of man? If real happiness in unattainable, how can unhappiness be avoided? These are questions that have generally agitated the minds of thinkers, philosophers, spiritualist, poets and even economists.
Happiness is a condition of the mind. It does not depend on something external, it springs from within. Contentment is the first condition of happiness. Some people think that happiness depends on wealth or riches. It is a mistaken idea. Money, no doubt can make the run of life easier but it cannot bring or buy any happiness. The greater are the possessions of a person, the greater are his worries. And the higher is your position, the greater are you responsibilities. It is a famous saying that worry will kill a cat. Likewise, he who is low should not fear at all. Greater happiness is found in poor man’s hut than in a rich man’s mansion, for he is contented. He puts his hopes in God and keeps his powers dry.
Power and pelf, profusion and plenty, property and estate can not bring happiness in life. It is an ever receding goal for a worldly person. Then the questions arises why is man unhappy? Man is unhappy because he thinks what he should not think about. He wants to get or possess what he can not possess. If we look at those who are rich and well placed in life, or compare our lots with theirs, we can never be happy. But if we shall look at those who are poor and low, we shall be consoled with our fate and be contented. The secret of happiness lies in contentment.
